The Morphettville Races

Part of South Australia’s history, the coveted Morphettville races are held at Allan Scott Park, Morphettville. If you have heard of Allan Scott Park and Morphettville Racecourse, you might not know that they are one and the same. The track was renamed in 2005. Well worth any betting attention, it is here that many of the Group races in South Australia are held.

The first race meeting was in 1875. In 2002, the track was improved. Approximately thirty five races are held at the Morphettville track.

A spacious course, the circumference of the Morphettville track is 2339 metres. It has a straight of 334 metres. Catering to a wide variety of races, they are run anywhere between 1000 metres and 3200 metres. The track itself has chutes at 1200, 1800 and 2000 metres.

The Adelaide Carnival at Morphettville

The Adelaide Carnival is an annual event that usually goes from March to May. The following all take place at the Morphettville track:

The Lord Reims Stakes is a Group 3 race (set weights plus penalty). It is held over 2600 metres and the prize money totals $125,000. The Breeders Stakes is also held on the same day and is also a Grade 3 race. Only 1200 metres long, it offers a lot of excitement for the punter. The Breeders’ Stakes is for two year olds (set weight) and the prize winnings are $100,000.

Another race held at the Morphettville track and is part of the Adelaide Carnival is the Adelaide Cup Day. The Adelaide Cup is raced over 3200 metres and is a Group 2 open handicap race. The prize money is $400,000. On the same day, Morphettiville runs the Yallmbee Stud Classic. This is also a Group 2, is run over 1200 metres, and is for three year olds (set weight). It has a prize of $200,000. The RN Irwin Stakes is also another must on your betting list. It is a premier Group 3 weight for age race. It is run over 1100m and is worth $100,000.

You might have heard of the Robert Sangster Stakes Day. This also takes place at the Morphettville Races. The Robert Sangster Stakes is a Group 1 weight for age. It is run over 1200 metres and prize winnings are $300,000. Another race on this day is the Australian Oaks – a Group 1, 2000 metre race. The Oaks is for three year olds (set weight). The Group 3 on the day is The Jansz. Raced over 1200 metres, it is for two year olds (set weight plus penalty) and winnings include $100,000.

In April, Morphettville hosts the South Australian Oaks Day which features the South Australian Oaks. A Group 3 event, it is for three year old fillies (set weight) and is raced over 2500 metres. April also sees the Queen of the South Stakes Day. The stakes is a Group 2 race over 1600 metres and is for both fillies and mares (set weight plus penalty). The winnings are $150,000. The DC McKay Stakes is also held on Queen of the South Stakes Day and is another Group 3 that you can bet on. It is 1100 metres and is a quality handicap. It offers $100,000 in prize money.

The Goodwood Handicap Day is another highlight at the Morphettville Races. The Goodwood Handicap is a Grade 1 race, run over 1200 metres. It is an open race (set weights plus penalty). The South Australia Derby is also run on this day. It is a 2500 metre race for three year olds (set weights). Two Group 3 races run at the Goodwood are the Sires Produce Stakes and the Auraria Stakes. The Sires Produce is over 1400 metres and is for two year olds, whilst the Auraria Stakes is run over 1800 metres and is for three year old fillies (set weights and penalty).

In August the Spring Stakes Day is run at the Morphettville Races. The Spring Stakes is a Grade 3 weight for age race and is over 1200 metres.
