Final Preview & Betting On The 2010 South Australian Derby

April 29th, 2010

This Sunday the $300,000 Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) – South Australia’s most elite thoroughbred horse race, will take place at the Morphettville Racecourse as part of the illustrious Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival.

Due to jump at 2.50pm on Sunday afternoon the 2010 South Australian Derby is one of eight races to form the race card, and will see 16 classy three-year-olds compete for the prize money.

In what looks set to be a close battle down on the track, Red Colossus is heading into Sunday’s race as favourite to win at $4.60.

In what looks set to be a close battle down on the track, Red Colossus is heading into Sunday’s race as favourite to win at $4.60. A victory for the gelding would provide him with his third consecutive win at the track, sealing a clean sweep of three-year-old events at the carnival.

However one to watch for the 2010 South Australian Derby is Kidnapped with odds of $4.80. Despite drawing the wide barrier, the Peter Snowden-trained gelding finished third to Red Colossus in the Chairman’s Handicap so could be a lucrative wager.

Storm Brewing and Second King, starting from barriers five and seven are at equal odds of $7.50 and round out the starters with single digit odds.

Storm Brewing has lost twice in the past month to Red Colossus, both times at Morphettville and with the inside barrier advantage will certainly be looking for some revenge.

Second King will also be looking to cross the finishing line first, as the Michael Kent-trained gelding has had to accept the bridesmaid position in his last three starts.

Extra Zero is another contender for the 2010 South Australian Derby, heading into the race with odds of $10. With the middle barrier, the David Hayes-trained colt is strong over the staying distance, recently finishing fifth in the Group 1 AJC Derby (2400).

Also taking place on Sunday at the Morphettville Racecourse will be the Group 1 Goodwood Handicap (1200m), the Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) and the Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m).
