The Goodwood Preview, Final Field & Betting 2010

April 29th, 2010

This Sunday one of Morphettville’s biggest race days will light up the track as the South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC) hosts the Unley Telstra Shop Super Sunday.

A range of premier group races will highlight the programme including the time-honoured $300,000 Group 1 The Distinctive Homes Goodwood (1200m).

An open field of 17 top-class horses will contest the 2010 Goodwood including the hot pre-race favourite Catapulted currently at $3.50 with Ladbrokes.com.au.

The Mark Kavanagh-trained Catbird gelding was impressive last start when he took out the Group 3 D C McKay Stakes (1100m) at the same track and if he backs up with a win on Sunday he will become the first horse since Boardwalk Angel in 1989 to take out the DC McKay – Goodwood double.

Catapulted’s performance in the Goodwood will also show Melbourne Cup winning trainer Kavanagh whether the four-year-old has what it takes for a Brisbane Winter Carnival campaign.

Other stars lining up on Sunday who are also dominating the Goodwood betting markets are the two females that ran the quinella in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) on April 20, Rostova and Velocitea.

Current second favourite for the Goodwood at $5.50 is Robert Sangster runner-up Velocitea after the Mick Price-trained Volksraad mare drew the inside alley.

Meanwhile three-year-old Testa Rossa filly Rostova, the only previous Group 1 winner contesting the Goodwood this year, will start beside her in barrier two and is third elect at $7.50 with Ladbrokes.com.au after running fifth in the Group 1 Galaxy (1100m) last start.

Other excellent chances in the 2010 Goodwood include last Orbit Express (barrier 11), Very Discreet (barrier six) and Captain Coltish (barrier seven) all coming off eye-catching last start victories.

Six-year-old Orbit Express took out the Victoria Handicap (1400m) in his second successive win at Caulfield, Exceed And Excel mare Very Discreet won the Listed Oakbank Stakes (1100m) on Easter Saturday, and the Peter Moody-trained Captain Coltish was a winner at Flemington in the Listed Schweppes Trophy (1400m).

The other Group 1 feature attraction at the meeting on Sunday will be the $300,000 Group 1 SA Derby (2500m).

The 2010 Goodwood is scheduled to jump at 3:35pm as race seven on the day’s bumper race-card.

Spectators and punters will also be entertained by the $200,000 Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m) and the $100,000 Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m).
