Fairy Oak Wins 2010 Darley Auraria Stakes

May 4th, 2010

On Sunday the Peter Moody-trained Fairy Oak secured a close win in the $100,000 Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) as part of the action of Super Sunday at Allan Scott Park Morphettville.

Showing her promise as a future staying star, Fairy Oak ($7) managed to beat home outsider El Spark ($21) by a long neck with the John Thompson-trained Legislature ($9) the same length away for third.

It was a devastating result for the hot pre-race favourite, the Mark Kavanagh-trained Zantelagh ($2.50) who came in 11th after being pushed out wide coming into the home turn, one horse ahead the previously unbeaten second favourite Hearts And Arrows ($6.50) in 12th.

But with less than four lengths separating the first 12 runners, and only one length between the first and fifth finishers, it was any horse’s race.

After the field bunched up on the turn, Fairy Oak hit the lead heading down the straight, which she managed to hold on to for the win. Meanwhile El Spark raced up the outside to secure second after putting in a gallant chase on the winner.

High Chaparral filly Fairy Oak, purchased by Brian Mayfield-Smith for $140,000 at the 2008 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale before being transferred to Moody upon his retirement, has now won in two and placed in the other two of her four race starts for over $74,000 in prizemoney after placing third on debut at Keyneton in June last year.

Fairy Oak was the fourth Australian stakes winner for boom sire High Chaparral this season alone, and Moody is now looking towards the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) on June 5 at the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

Two Group 1 races highlighted Morphettville’s Super Sunday meeting, the $300,000 Goodwood (1200m) where Velocitea, another horse previously trained by the now-retired Mayfield-Smith, raced up the rails to win ahead of the local favourite Catapulted, and the $300,000 South Australian Derby (2500m) won by the odds-on favourite Kidnapped.

Detailed results of both these events can be found on the news page on this site.
